Rouge Valley Community Centre Achieves Net-Zero Milestone with Solar PV + Thermal System Installed by New Dawn Energy Solutions
The City of Toronto has taken a major step toward sustainability with the completion of a state-of-the-art Net Zero Energy project at the Rouge Valley Community Recreation Centre. Installed by New Dawn Energy Solutions, the integrated solar PV and thermal (PVT) system will supply clean electricity and heat while significantly reducing the facility’s carbon footprint.
The project features a 200 kW rooftop solar PVT array and 748 kW of solar PV canopies across the parking area, together offsetting the centre’s total energy consumption.
On the rooftop, 472 Dualsun finned hybrid (PVT) 425W modules paired with Solis high-efficiency inverters and Terragen Solar fixed-tilt racking deliver both electricity and thermal energy. These PVT panels work with a heat pump system to produce heat and support building heating and cooling throughout the year—generating an estimated 220 MWh of electricity and 290 MWh-th of thermal energy annually.
The parking canopies feature 1,385 LONGi 540W PV modules, 12 Solis High Efficient inverters mounted on innovative L, Y, and long-span canopy structures manufactured by M&G Steel, with racking provided by Kinetic Solar. These PV panels on the parking canopies generating an estimated 850 MWh of electricity annually. Combined, these systems contribute to a smarter, cleaner energy future for the community.
Opened to the public in November 2025, Rouge Valley Community Centre stands as Toronto’s first Net Zero community facility, serving as a dynamic hub for recreation, learning, and sustainability. The centre not only reduces carbon emissions but also raises community awareness about renewable energy and climate action.
Based in Markham, New Dawn Energy Solutions proudly partners with homeowners, businesses, institutions, and municipalities to cut energy costs, strengthen energy resilience, and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. We are honoured to have contributed to the City of Toronto’s vision of sustainable urban development.
